Acer palmatum 'Gaki no sugi' leaves emerge in the spring as cream to white with bright green veins. New growth during the summer will be a peach to pink with reticulation. In the fall, 'Gaki no sugi' leaves turn bright oranges to red. You should see 'Gaki no sugi' reach 6ft high and 6ft wide in 10 years. For best color, we recommend growing Acer palmatum 'Gaki no sugi' in morning sun with afternoon shade. This keeps 'Gaki no sugi' out of the extreme heat which causes the colors to fade. On mature plants, 'Gaki no sugi' has one of the largest leaves of any of the reticulated ghost-like types.
