Floating Clouds Japanese Maple
Zones 5-9
Acer palmatum 'Ukigumo' is an upright growing Japanese maple that has nearly white leaves in the spring that will gradually turn green/pale green by summer. The white color on 'Ukigumo' is better in climates with milder temperatures (PNW) but can be stunning even here in the hotter southern areas of the USA too. Some years our big 'Ukigumo' in the garden has little spring color and some years it can be stunning. On the West coast the variegation tends to be white with a little green and here in North Carolina it is often pink/purple/white/green and can be quite stunning. Best to protect this plant from harsh afternoon sun for best color. You can expect this plant to be about 12' x 12' in 10-15 years. Acer palmatum 'Ukigumo' turns shades of gold and bright orange during the fall.
