Osmanthus fragrans? RARE NEW GARDEN TREASURES INTRODUCTION
Osmanthus fragrans? RARE NEW GARDEN TREASURES INTRODUCTION
Osmanthus fragrans or Osmanthus x fortunei 'Aurora' is a RARE NEW GARDEN TREASURES INTRODUCTION found as a branch mutation on a very old Osmanthus at the J C Raulston Arboretum. The plant predates the arboretum and only was labeled as "Osmanthus". We think it is Osmanthus fragrans, but it might be Osmanthus x fortunei. The original branch(es) were lightly marbled/mottled with pale yellow markings. We propagated the best branches, grew them a couple of years, and then selected the very best branches from our plants to propagate. Osmanthus fragrans or Osmanthus x fortunei 'Aurora' is much more variegated than the original branch mutation, but this type of variegation isn't overly stable generally, so I would expect less variegated branches sometimes. Osmanthus fragrans or Osmanthus x fortunei 'Aurora' is extremely rare and we only have a few plants available. A must have for the collector of Osmanthus (EVERYONE should be!) Osmanthus fragrans or Osmanthus x fortunei 'Aurora' would be great in a hedge, mass planting, or as a specimen. Best planted in full sun in decent garden soil. Fairly drought tolerant once established. Osmanthus fragrans or Osmanthus x fortunei 'Aurora' is so new, we don't even have one planted in our own garden yet!
