Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Spike' - GARDEN TREASURES INTRODUCTION - RARE
Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Spike' - GARDEN TREASURES INTRODUCTION - RARE
Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Spike' (holly osmanthus, holly olive, false holly, tea olive) is an upright shrub with dark green, extremely spikey leaves and small, fragrant white flowers. Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Spike' is a Garden Treasures introduction originating as a seedling from 'Sasaba' and has the same upright growth habit as the parent plant (appears to be even narrower growing) and EXTREMELY spiny leaves. Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Spike' makes a narrow, upright statement in the garden and almost has the appearance of a saguaro cactus in outline (but spikier than the cactus lol). Additionally Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Spike' has larger flowers than the species and is actually very showy in bloom. Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Spike' makes a stunning specimen in the garden where a vertical accent is needed and is best used as a small grouping or single specimen. Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Spike' will likely remain rare and rarely available - no one at the nursery wants to make cuttings - takes a certain degree of masochism to propagate it!
